Domestic vs International Flight Booking: What to Check Before You Pay

5 March 2026

Domestic and international flight bookings look similar on the surface but have very different rules around documents, baggage, and cancellation.

Before booking a domestic flight

  • Check baggage allowance, budget domestic airlines often charge extra for checked bags
  • Confirm your government photo ID matches your booking name exactly
  • Check the cancellation and rescheduling fee before you pay

Before booking an international flight

  • Confirm passport validity, most countries require at least 6 months of validity from your travel date
  • Check visa requirements for your destination and any layover countries
  • Confirm international baggage allowance, it's often different from domestic rules on the same airline
